Tips and tricks to organize a cluttered garage
So it is that time of year again where the weather is getting warmer and you are better able to work outside. One of the most infamous outdoor jobs is organizing your garage. The following article gives you some tips and tricks to make your garage the easy to use efficient space that it once was. You can do this with minimal cost and a little bit of elbow grease.
The first thing to take stock of is the shelving/wall Storage, or lack thereof, that your garage has. If you have a brand new garage or no shelving yet installed this is a good place to start. Generally garages are not much larger than your car or cars and a little walking space. This leaves little room for the kid's outdoor toys, any tools or home maintenance equipment and other garage related items. It is important to get essential items off the valuable floor space and the only way to do this is with shelving or related accessories such as hooks and hangers.
There are many cheap options for wall storage. If you have some spare 2x4 boards and other lumber lying around and also the proper tools, you can construct a shelf from scratch. A decent shelf can be made with minimal lumber and instructions can often be found on the internet. Purchasing these materials if you do not have them is also relatively cheap. A few 12 foot 2x4's, a sheet of plywood and a box of nails will be less than 50 dollars in most areas of the U.S. With a well built 2x4 shelf you can store larger and heavier items that may not be used as often up off the ground to save precious walking and working space.
Another way to get items up and out of the way is with hooks and hangers. Local hardware stores or hyper markets like Meijer or Target carry lawn and garden supplies and will often also carry organization accessories like rubber coated hooks or folding hangers. These can easily be screwed into studs of a wall after pre-drilling a hole. They are great for hanging landscaping appliances like weed wackers or everyday items like sprinklers and hoses. Screwing these pieces of hardware into the ceiling of your garage is a great way to hang bikes too.
An essential tip before you go filling all those shelves and hooks is to make a list or at least think really hard about what it is that really needs to be in your garage. For example if you live in an area that experiences all four seasons, off season equipment should be removed and stored somewhere else if possible. Keeping your snow blower in the garage all summer doesn't make much sense when you could put it in a shed or basement if you have that option. Of course if you don't have that option, getting other smaller items up and out of the way will leave more room on the floor for the 2 to 3 larger pieces of equipment you may have. In a nutshell, get everything out of your garage won't be useful to have in there for the next three months.
Organizing your garage is easy if you just stay motivated and you are armed with knowledge of a few simple techniques. Assess what is needed and what is not for the time being and remove items accordingly. If you don't have any shelving or hangers along your walls or ceiling, get some cheap hardware and be creative. Get as much as you can up and out of the way to maximize the amount of floor space you can use for working and walking. For a typical 1.5 car garage, you should be able to fit a couple of midsized cars in with a little bit of walking and working room most of the way around them. You should be able to do this with many common items found in a garage still there.
